Here are the Melbourne bars you need to be getting excited about

It’s been pretty quiet on the new bars front lately, but there’s a lot of summer fun on its way. Here are the joints we’re getting ready to party at…

The Emerson
Hitting the southside in late October, Emerson is going to be a triple decker restaurant, club and bar with a floor of shadowy booths, a rooftop for howling at the moon and a lower level pushing a solid agenda of entertainment.

The Emerson, 143-145 Commercial Rd, South Yarra.

Fitzroy Beer Garden
Gertrude Street’s Sentido Funf has had a major overhaul and is now the Fitzroy Beer Garden. Thankfully the leafy beer garden is still there, but now so is a whole lot of absinthe, beers, DJs and a monthly market.

Fitzroy Beer Garden, 243-245 Gertrude St, Fitzroy.

New Orleans
Liver, brace yourself. The Balleau brothers have taken over the old Hell Towers Saloon site and come January, they’ll have turned it into a mini New Orleans. On the cards is a smoke house, an absinthe and oyster room and crab boils in the courtyard. They’re planning on using that 24-hour license too. Excited doesn’t cut it.

New Orleans, 51 Gipps St, Collingwood.

The Kelvin Club
Jerome Borazio, the man who brought you such institutions as St Jerome’s and Shit Town, is helping this institution come kicking into 2013 with live entertainment, cocktails and food. It’s still members only, but on Fridays you’ll be able to check it out sans membership.

The Kelvin Club, Melbourne Pl, Melbourne.
